Youth for innovation trust In partnership with Action aid Zimbabwe and Activista Zimbabwe hosted the first ever Youth Governance Heroes Awards in Bulawayo today.
The awards were held as it was deemed important that young people who advocate for change in the society be celebrated and motivated to keep on doing their best in local governance.
Youth for Innovation Trust realized that there are not enough platforms in the city or country as a whole that celebrate young people who are making a change in their communities.
One of the nominees stated that it is important to have more platforms like these that celebrate young people who are making an impact in their different spaces and hopes that YIT continues with this great initiative as it motivates them to work even harder.
There were four main categories which are the outstanding media practitioner, councillor, activist and artist.
Zimpaper’s Rutendo Nyeve and Sunday News Vusumuzi Dube had been nominated for the outstanding media practitioners and Vusumuzi Dube won the award.
Councillors Skhululekile Moyo of Ward 27, Arnold Batirai of Ward 24 and Mlandu Ncube the Ward 1 councillor and Deputy Mayor of the city of Bulawayo contested for the outstanding councillor. The award was presented to Skhululekile Moyo.
Sehliselwe Ncube of Eddien Sports Trust and Cinderella Ndlovu of Green Hut Initiative contested for the outstanding activist and Cinderella won the award.
Finally in the artists award, Mlu Jay, Bleckhit and poet Rachel Voko contested for the outstanding artist and Bleckhit won the award.
Just in May, Bleckhit won the Voices for Change that was facilitated by CITE and spoke on his song ‘Corruption’.
The latter, is a trivial issue which is ought to be addressed so as to advocate for change in our societies.
The Covid 19 pandemic brought about anomalies which have made it hard for young people to face their day to day lives.
Despite this pandemic, we found our heroes forging ahead and bringing into life sustainable solutions which have proven to be effective and of great importance in Bulawayo.
The Director of Youth for Innovation Trust Thando Gwinji, stated that these awards are vital as it is a way of applauding and motivating our heroes to forge ahead.
“It is of importance to recognise the efforts that are being made by our fellow citizens to bring about solutions that advocate for change and development in our society so that we have a better Bulawayo” she said.
